Indoor Track Meeting: Tuesday 11/14 @ 2:15 pm!!

Monday 11/27:  First day of Indoor Track practice.

11/05:  Mike Lynch 9th at States, team places 11th!

Junior Mike Lynch rode his best effort all season to a 9th place finish at the 2006 Rhode Island Cross Country Championship at Ponaganset High.  Lynch was in 15th place at 2.5 miles and surged past six runners in the final .6 miles to earn the distinction of 2nd Team All State.  Mike's time of 16:41 on the challenging Ponaganset course was 30 seconds better than his effort one week earlier at the Class B Championship.  Sophomore Kyle Yusen was next for PHS placing 55th in 17:45 followed by Kevin Ryan (73rd, 18:04), Sjur Hoftun (79th, 18:12), Mark Manning (88th, 18:19), Mike Scardina (104th, 18:34) and Steve Morris (113th, 19:01) for an 11th place team finish.  Lynch, Yusen, Hoftun, Manning and Scardina all ran personal bests under the pressure of the season's biggest meet.  Lynch and Yusen will lead the charge in 2007 and will be aided by the likes of Mike Collins, Peter WrightBrian Nash, Chris Bobba, Mike Rosssi and several other talented athletes.

On the girls side Alyssa O'Connor (42nd, 21:00) and Liz Corvese (50th, 21:13) led the Lady Patriots to a 15th place finish.  Amy Larsen (103rd, 22:28), Savannah Geasey (107th, 22:36), Julie MacDougall (111th, 23:02), Alicia Perras (118th, 23:25) and Meg Lee (119th, 23:27) rounded out the scoring for PHS.  PHS should be a force to be reckoned with in 2007 as six of the top seven runners will be returning for the Patriots.  Special thanks to an amazing group of Senior Boys and Girls who were a pleasure to coach and who represented Portsmouth High so very well.

10/28:  Patriots looking to secure State Meet berths.

With a gutty performance on Sunday both the Boys and Girls can secure a State Meet position for next week.  The Top 2 teams in each Class that have not previosuly qualified via a Top 3 league finish will advance to the Rhode Island State Meet.  In 2005 the Girls advanced, but the Boys fell just short.  It will take a complete effort by ALL the Top Seven runners to advance. Good Luck!

10/18:  Boys and Girls win Newport County Championship!

Liz Corvese (L) and Alyssa O'Connor (without left shoe).   Mike Lynch (L), Kevin Ryan and Kyle Yusen.

The Patriots rode strong performances from both teams to claim double victory at the 2006 Newport County Cross Country Championship.  Junior Mike Lynch led the way for the boys in winning the meet for the second consecutive year.  He was followed by Kyle Yusen (3rd overall), Kevin Ryan (4th), Sjur Hoftun (5th) and Mark Manning (6th) in a dominating performance.  PHS has now claimed the team title for the 4th consecutive year.  Sophomore Alyssa O'Connor took top honors and was followed closely across the line by Liz Corvese (2nd) as the PHS Girls won the County Championship for the first time in a few years.

10/15:  Whalley and MacDougall competing in college.

Jeff Whalley (left) and Matt MacDougall (PHS '06) each competed this past weekend for their respective universities.  Jeff runs for The University of Rochester Yellow Jackets (Rochester, NY) and Matt competed for the Queens University Golden Gaels (Kingston, Ontario).  Jeff competed at the Yellow Jackets Invitational at Genesee Valley Park in Rochester while his friend Matt competed across Lake Ontario at The Queens Cross Country Invitational at Fort Henry Hill.  Congratulations to you both, we're proud of you!

10/13:  PHS 4th and 6th at Burriville Invitational

With the focus on team running and not overall time the Portsmouth Patriots placed 4th at the Burriville Invitational on Thursday behind East Greenwich, Cumberland and Lincoln.  The Varsity Seven ran the first two miles entirely together before separating slightly over the last mile.  The result was the closest team finish that the team has had all season, a requirement for success in the coming weeks.  Mike Lynch led the way placing 16th overall followed by Kevin Ryan, Kyle Yusen, Sjur Hoftun, Mike Scardina, Mark Manning and Mike Collins.  In a sign of the team's depth, the Patriots easily won the JV Race with Steve Morris placing 2nd overall followed closely by Peter Wright, Brian Nash, Robby Chaves, Chris Bobba and Mike Rossi.  On the Girl's side Sophomores Alyssa O'Connor and Liz Corvese led PHS to a 6th place finish.  They were followed across the line by Meg Lee, Amy Larsen, Savannah Geasey, Julie MacDougall and Kendra Munkacsy.

10/09:  Patriots complete regular season with a 7-3 record.

The Portsmouth Patriots finished their Southern Division schedule with a record of 7 Wins and 3 losses.  Junior Mike Lynch has led the way for PHS all season running some outstanding times.  Senior Kevin Ryan and Sophomore Kyle Yusen complete a strong Top 3 for PHS.  Seniors Sjur Hoftun and Mike Blaess have consistently been Top 5 "Scorers" for Portsmouth.  There are a number of candidates for the remaining two "Varsity" spots for the Class B Championship on October 28th.  They include Seniors Mark Manning, Steve Morris and Mike Scardina, Sophomores Peter Wright and Brian Nash and Freshman Mike Collins.  A total team effort from the seven designated runners will be needed for Portsmouth to secure a State Meet berth out of the Class B Meet.

11/07:  Portsmouth completes 2005 season at R.I State Championship.

The Girl's Team and six individuals from the Boy's Team competed at the R.I State Championship on Sunday 11/06.  The Girls placed 17th (405 points) in Rhode Island and were paced by another strong effort from Freshman Alyssa O'Connor, 41st overall in 21:21.  Junior Captain Alicia Perras was next (73rd, 22:36) followed by Savannah Geasey (97th, 23:27), Kendra Munkacsy (119th, 24:37), Leona Antonio (121st, 24:46), Emma Young (125th, 25:09) and Julia Sisson (119th, 25:35).  Coach Tara Jones' team appears poised for an outstanding 2006 season as only one Varsity runner, Leona Antonio, from the State Meet was a Senior.

In the Boy's Championship, Sophomore Mike Lynch fell 10 seconds short of qualifying for the New England Championships (Top 25 Overall) by placing 34th in 17:44.  Senior Matt Mac Dougall was next (69th, 18:27) followed by Mike Blaess, Jeff Whalley, Alan Munkacsy and Kyle Yusen.  In a qualifying irregularity the Boys ran as individuals and not as a team even though they met the 5 man minimum for a scoring team.  The State Meet field is capped at 18 teams and PHS fell just 2 points short at Class C the previous week.  Congratulations to Seniors Dan Gittings, Matt Mac Dougall, Alan Munkacsy and Jeff Whalley on completing their High School Cross Country careers.

SOME BACKGROUND ON PORTSMOUTH CROSS COUNTRY!!

Division, Class and County opponents:

The Portsmouth Patriots compete in the Southern Division of the R.I Interscholastic League against North Kingstown, South Kingstown, Westerly, Coventry, Chariho, Rogers, Middletown, Narraganset, Prout and Exeter-West Greenwich.

The state is broken into three Classes based on school enrollment for the Class Championships on Saturday October 29th.  Portsmouth competes in Class B with Chariho, LaSalle, Warwick Vets, North Providence, Mt. Hope, Toll Gate, Shea, Westerly, West Warwick, Lincoln, Barrington, Ponaganset and Central Falls.

The Newport County Championship consists of Portsmouth, Portsmouth Abbey, St. Georges, Rogers and Middletown.  Portsmouth is the three time defending Team Champion.

Scoring:

In Cross Country, like Golf, the lowest score wins!!  Each runner is given the same # of points as his finishing position (Winner = 1 point, 2nd place = 2 Pts, etc.).  The sum total of the top Five (5) runners from each team makes up the team score (aggregate timing is no factor).

The 6th and 7th runners (while not scorers) play a very, very important role.  Their job is to place ahead of as many runners from the opposing team as possible, resulting in an increased score for that team.  While the overall race winner gets most of the attention the 4th through 7th runners from each team often determine the outcome of the meet.  Long story short, battle all the way through the finish line.  Reminder, only SEVEN runners will represent PHS in the Varsity Race at the Class and State Meets.

Coaches:

The Boys team is coached by Steve Trezvant (PHS Class of 1994).  Steve is both an accomplished runner and coach.  Steve was the R.I State Champion in the 800 Meters his senior year at PHS and he was also Newport County Cross Country Champion.  In College Steve ran for Wake Forest University (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) of the Atlantic Coast Conference.  He is a substitue teacher in the Portsmouth school system and his pursuing his Masters in Education at Rode Island College.  This is Steve's 7th season as the boys X-C coach.  He has led Portsmouth to four consecutive Newport County Championships and also the Class C Championship in 2002 and 2003.

Rosie Sosnowski is in her first season as Head Coach of the Girl's team.  She served as assistant coach for the Girl's Track and Field program last year.  Rosie won between a "few" and "several" individual State Championships for South Kingstown High School and had a very successful running career for Brown University where she is listed as one of the Top 10 5000 Meter runners in Brown Bear history.  She is a Spanish teacher at Portsmouth High.
